Sermon English Text AKFPC / July 12, 2026 Rev. Yongjin Park
“Born Again BY Water And Spirit” (John’s Gospel 3:1-8)
May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.
Nicolas Copernicus said in his book “On the Revolution of the heavenly Spheres,’ earth rotates sun not sun rotates earth on 1543. it was revolutionary thought then for people who believed in Ptolemy’s theory “sun rotates earth.” but his observation was proved by later science and discover. He was wonderful pioneer to find rightly facts and truth of nature by only observation and research only.
On 1687 Issac Newton said in his book “Principia,” we are in universal gravitation. When he saw a falling apple, he believed in there are pulling power from earth to hold all things.
But then people did not trust their idea. The truth is always alone and needs to wait for long time to be proved. Especially truth created by God is not easy for people to understand but by help of Holy Spirit it can be understood.
Today Bible let us know Jesus Christ taught Nicodemus on born again. Through this Word, let us learn about how we can be born again as children of God.
Let us read together John’s Gospel 3:3-8,
“In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” “How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!”
Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, You must be born again.” The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going, So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
One night Nicodemus, a member of ruling council of Israel, Pharisees, visited Jesus Christ asking how I can be saved. Jesus answered him to be born again if you want to enter kingdom of God. He asked again how can be born again when he is old. Jesus said, as we cannot see wind but feel it, you can be born again by Spirit. We cannot see but God can make it.
Jesus rebuked him that why he as teacher of people could not understand about work of Holy Spirit.
Jesus said about a bronze snake on pole in desert of Moses era as symbol of saving life in Old Testament. It was special way of God to save dying people in desert due to disobedience. Whoever saw the snake all were saved. But people who did not see the snake symbol according to direction of God, were not saved.
John’s Gospel 3:17 say,
“For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”
It is nature of humans not to believe in that people cannot see. But world has many things that we cannot see but exists real as air, gravitation, universe, or cell. Necessary things are not seen mostly. We cannot see God, but he created all things in the world.
It cannot be evidence not to be seen on living God. He is working on it now to keep us alive and saved as Creator and Redeemer.
Jesus said God is working to save us still in us by Water and Spirit while we cannot see Him by our eyes.
Verse 6-8 say,
“Flesh gives birth flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. If we say there is no wind when we cannot see it, we become with lack knowledge. We cannot say that Holy Spirit is not real even though we cannot see it.”
Holy Spirit already have us know that we are born again life of God. And we have holy heart and mind coming from God. This is evidence of being in Spirit.
Water is baptism in repentance; Spirit is Holy Spirit. This two are evidence of children of God. This is way of God changing sinner to holy life in God.
Becoming the righteous is not from our effort but from grace of God in precise blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord as ransom for our salvation. In desert, people of Israel under Moses have resent due to hard road and poor food according to the book of Numbers. God sent snakes to bite them, many were dying soon. Moses requested God to save his people from sin and death. God gave him a order to heal all of them. It was bronze snack on pole. All who saw the snack were healed but those who did not see it had died all.
This snack symbol adopted now ambulance as symbol of healing. Symbol of death became symbol of healing. Cross was symbol of death and sin but in Jesus Christ this became symbol of healing and salvation.
It is grace of God for us to became children of God. And it is by grace of Holy Spirit. Brothers and sisters in the Lord,
We are saved by grace of God in blood of Jesus Christ. Life in this grace of saving love is free from sin, world, and judgement. Nobody blocks us from worship and praise to God. And nobody hinders us from love of God.
When a little girl came to church summer camp one day for the first time. And she learned on Jesus Christ and God’s loving grace. Small faith entered her mind, and she began to love Him. One day she dreamed of Jesus Christ. She accepted this as response from God for her faith. She has been serving diligently now Lord and His people in worship and praise as Sunday school. She confessed “I am born again children of God Amen.”
I John 5:2 say,
“This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands.”
