“My Lord My God” (Ruth 1:15-18)

May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.

Winter Olympic Game is running in Milano of Italy. There was a dramatic snowboard final match of half pipe game. Gaon Choi won the gold medal in the third run despite two failures. She is 17 years old and the youngest winner in the world. Her mento Chloe Kim won silver medal but she and her family ran to Gaon to give big hug when Gaon won with true congrats.

Chloe was gold medalist winner of two times Olympic Game and might be three gold medalist winners. But she gave big congrats to her mentee, Gaon with integrated heart.  Bronz medalist Ono Mitsuki gave her big congrats as well with respect to her.

Ono said it was not easy for Gaon to overcome failure and fear injury with bravery. We can see fairness and true love in young people in the game. And there were sacrifices from their fathers to support children. It was one of true love in family as well.

Today Bible let us see what we seek as children of God.

Let’s read together on Ruth 1:15-18,

“Look,” said Naomi, “your sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods. Go back with her. But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.

Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.” When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.”

One family immigrated from Bethlehem to Moab due to hunger for better life circumstance. The husband died and two sons got married but they both had died sadly. Naomi wanted to go back to her people and hometown and let two daughters-in-law go back to their family. One went back to her home but other did not want to go back instead wanted to stay with her mother-in-law. Naomi urged her to go back but Ruth did not want to leave Naomi. So, Naomi stopped to urge her to go back. They returned to Bethlehem together.

For Ruth, there was unfamiliar land and people. She has chosen God and love on the pity mother-in-law who lost all family. Ruth learned God after marriage. Her country was obeyed not God but idol. When she knew God, she accepted Him as her true Lord. That is the first reason to stay and the second is for Naomi.

Her righteous choice pleased God who is love and righteousness. She had nothing in foreign land, but God gave her blessing. She worked hard to take care of her mother-in-law in Bethlehem. God made her meet good man, Boars as new husband. They got married and had son. He was grandfather of King David.

The era of Judges was complicated time of Israel history. There was rarely keeping on rule and law. But the story of Ruth was like a small light in the dark night.

Brothers and sisters in the Lord,

We need to choose as children of God righteous option. We must love God and neighbors. This is what God pleases. When we choose the right one from hard time of our situation, God will give blessing on us. People without God are free to choose any kind of thing, but people with God must obey the will of faithful God. Through this obedience of us God make His great work of salvation.

Let us try to keep on God’s right and loving will. Let us love God and life with faith and righteousness.

God uses our heart with mercy on pity life and pity people.

Matthew’s Gospel 5:6-7 says,

“Blessed are those who huger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are those merciful, for they will be shown mercy.”

God now seek those who have mercy to complete His great plan to save sinful people. We have characteristics of God in our image. So, Lord said to us, you are the light in the world to shine on it. Our name is in heaven and our light in the world. We are light of love, hope, and faith. This is our blessing and mission as children of loving God.

Aquila and Priscilla have been working for righteousness. God made them to meet Apostles Paul while they serve people. God made the wonderful work through them together in spreading gospel of Jesus Christ in Roman world.

Lydia has been serving people with mercy and God mad her meet Paul as well who proclaimed kingdom of God. God made great work through them as well in calling people in a city of Phillippo.

Psalm 128:1 say,

“Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in his ways,”

One paster ordered a house supply when he and his wife planted a new church in a small town in Korea. The owner of the supply shop felt pity on them when he delivered the supply ordered. He began to help them by inviting people to the new church and he became first member of it and later was baptized. And he became a great leader of the church and has done wonderful role in Congregation to deliver gospel of Jesus Christ. His business has grown as well while serving people of God. He confessed, “God used my heart of merciful mind in that moment. That was my calling from God.”

Let us follow God’s calling and respond with love and mercy. God will make his great love with our faith.

Psalm 145:17-18 says,

“The Lord is righteous in all his ways and loving toward all he has made. The Lord is near to all who call in him, to all who call on him in truth.”

God will be all of you, Amen.
