Sermon English Text AKFPC / January 11, 2026 Rev. Yongjin Park
“Press On Toward Goal To Win” (Philippians 3:12-16)
May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.
Last week US has changed president of Venezuela from Maduro to Rodrigues not to Machado who received Noble Peace Prize after arresting Maduro. And US began to try purchasing Greenland to obtain arctic shipping route as an important nation resource.
China that purchased 80% oil of Venezuela have lost their important source of income and Russia will be lost their exclusivity on arctic shipping route. US has done secession from more than 60 organizations of UN this year.
This means that new paradigm has begun in global political situation toward multipolar sharing leadership from US to China and Russia. China might be main role in Asia and Russia in Europe while US in America.
That is relief that South Korea became a strong country in this complicated situation of the world. This comes from right faith to God who bless on people and nation believing God Almighty.
We must pray for more than before to be blessed.
Today Bible let us know how we press on toward our goal in faith.
Let us read together Philippians 3:12-14.
“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,”
Apostle Paul has been arrested by Roman empire while working to deliver gospel of Jesus Christ because their policy of Rome has been changed to persecute church.
Paul sent this letter to congregation of church in Philippo comforting them by Word of God.
He emphasized what is our mission as children of God. That is to build realm of God in this secular world through worship and truth from God.
Verse 14 say,
“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
We are called to be servant of God for kingdom of God, and our goal is to work for Him in the world. Who can we do this? Through worship and life, we can accomplish our mission from God.
Worldly people press on toward goals to win for glory of the world. But we Godly people press on toward goal to win for glory of God not ourselves.
Jesus Christ said before Pilate Pontus, my nation does not belong to this world. What is our goal to win?
Our goal is to follow and to build the will of God in the world. Love and justice are characteristics of God and He wants this world to be what He pleases. We work for His gracious and holy will on this world and this life with our faith and life steadfastly.
Verse 12 say,
“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.”
Paul recommended his people in God to focus on our calling from God. And he asked them to follow himself following Lord steadfastly.
Paul has been focusing on only Lord after encountering the risen Lord on the way to Damascus. He has not been hesitating to follow God in his ministry. He led many souls to God through his great mission to proclaim gospel in gentile world. Many churches were built in Roman world through his ministry. He suggested children of God to learn more and to imitate model of faith near them.
Verse 17 say,
“Join with others in following my example, brothers, and take note of those who live according to the pattern we gave you.”
We need standard of faith while we serve others in God. There are some examples around us in working with others in God.
If you respect others in serving others in God, they can be good example to serve and to follow in God.
Learning mind is good for us to improve our faith in God. Learning and serving are same in believing God. Blaming always is not helpful to grow our faith. When we trust and respect others, our faith can grow and be strengthened.
Brothers and sisters in the Lord,
We are all called from God who is good and faithful. Let us try to learn so that we can grow in God.
If you follow good example in God, we can grow toward what you want to follow as well.
Philippians 4:1 say,
“Therefore, my brothers, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, that is how you should stand firm in the Lord, dear friends!”
Let us stand in God not outside of God. Let us follow examples of faith near ourselves to serve them more.
Endless love and trust to God lead us to be example to others who follow.
When Apostle has followed God firmly, Timothy and Luke and Aquila and Priscilla followed him as example. He could be good example in faith as great standard of faith before many people in God.
One elder in a church have been serving others in God firmly. He have not hesitated to serve others for God. One man loved him with respect so, he followed him helping him long time. Later the young man became example of faith in their church. People wanted really to follow him as he has done.
Philippians 4:3 say,
“Yes, and I ask you, loyal yokefellow, help these women who have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose name are in the book of life.”
God be with all of you, Amen.
