“Give You Her Food Not Me” (Luke’s Gospel 8:49-56)
May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.
Long times ago I have been a church in Seoul to see a drama that some young men performed to celebrate for their church anniversary.
They performed a story of Jesus’s healing a child daughter of a synagogue leader. She was about to die so her father came to Jesus with desperate heart asking to heal.
Jesus healed her and told them to give her something to eat. But everyone forgot what Jesus ordered them, so the child lost her health again due to no food. This is the main story of the drama.
They lost their own mission to nurture their child due to being trapped in miracle overwhelmed. The drama gave me thought of what we must do as servant of God after receiving grace.
Let us read Luke’s Gospel 8:52-55 together.
“Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.” They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!” Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat.”
Jesus Christ have healed many people, and multiple people did seek him and follow to get healing from variety disease. Jairus was one of them. His only daughter about died due to certain disease. He came up Jesus desperately and asked to heal his lovely one. Jesus headed to his house for seeing her. While heading there, a woman with 12 years disease was healed when she touched Jesus’s clothes among crowd.
Meanwhile, a man from the house of Jairus came to report his child was dead. But Jesus kept going his house to see his child. When they arrived the house people wept on her death. But Jesus said that she did not die but asleep. People laughed at him, but Jesus ordered the child “My child, get up!” her spirit returned and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat.”
Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.
The word of Jesus Christ was two orders after saving a life with miracle. One is to give something to eat, and the other is not to tell what happened.
Why did the Lord do that to those who experienced miracles as special grace after serious situation?
We seek God desperately once we are in big trouble because we are in fear to lose everything we have. God sometimes answered to give us what we asked with miracle grace. This is urgent answer of God to save our life from danger.
This is because God loves us so much so, Lord wants us to live health and peaceful in our life journey that He designed. His top priority is our life itself, and he is watching our life always. When we ask God to save life Lord answered steadfastly us.
Therefore, our top mission who received this kind of grace from God is to keep caring life diligently and consistently. We need to give something to eat more than past.
This is why Jesus ordered us not to tell others what had happened. Focusing miracle rather than focusing on life misleads us with the wrong way of faith. Miracle is for God just tool to save us. That is not purpose but just method. But we focus on the method rather than our mission to save life.
But brothers and sisters in our Lord,
We have lots of experiences on miracles and grace from God in life. We have no time or energy to look away on worldly glory. We are thankful always to God with sincere heart after receiving graces.
We need to focus on our mission to nurture life in home, church, and community.
In Luke’s Gospel 9:13, Jesus told his disciples to give something to eat for the people in the wilderness when they need food after Word.
God makes miracle for us. So, we need to nurture life what God Loves. That is our mission.
Miracle comes to those who accomplish with sincere heart. God helps them with miracle once they work hard to keep the life that God loves. So, this miracle is gift and answer from God to them.
Therefore, we as children of God must see our mission not to see miracle or heaven.
In Acts 1:11, angels of God told the disciples who saw only heaven after ascension of Jesus Christ, “why are you seeing only heaven?”
“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”
This is time to do our own mission diligently delivering gospel of Jesus Christ not looking into miracles.
For God is alive, miracles are keeping coming always. We must do our mission nurturing life. Let us focus on what is our mission before God to nurture.
There is common ground in those who received prayer answers from God many times. They are all who work hard and diligent to nurture life in their mission field as home, church, and work.
II Corinthians 9:6,
“Remember this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.”
God be with all of you, Amen.
