Sermon English Text AKFPC / April 19, 2026 Rev. Yongjin Park
“Wait For Holy Spirit” (Acts 1:1-11)
May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.
Arnold Lazarus, said in his book “The Marriage of Myth” there are some misconceptions on marriage as these. All problems can be resolved by only love. Partners need to understand me perfectly. We both need to do it together. These misconceptions make marriage unhappy.
Marriage exists not just in romantic fantasy but with ceaseless effort and negotiating skill to resolve ongoing issues in life. This is labor to understand differences of each other to accept.
More than 90% of gray divorces might fail according to Statistics. Lazarus points that marriage is to put in effort with no rush but with help from each other to achieve same goal. Staying with each other is true love.
Today Bible let us know what blessings from God is given to those who stayed with Lord.
Let us read together 1:4-8,
“On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” So when they met together, they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witness in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Luke was the co-worker and physical doctor for Apostle Paul while traveling Europe for delivering gospel of Jesus Christ to gentile and he wrote Luke’s Gospel to let people know about life and Word of Jesus Christ and book of Acts for how to begin the church in the world.
In Acts Jesus Christ commanded his disciples while staying with them for 40 days after resurrection from crucifixion. One is to not leave Jerusalem. The other is to wait for Holy Spirit that God Promised.
Lord Jesus Christ ordered them not to leave Jerusalem. What is there? There was a place that they failed and were ashamed of as disciples. They all fled while Jesus arrested and killed and they experienced the risen Lord again. They did there fails and recovery of life and mission.
Lord asked them to stay there for new mission and new life restored. Lord wanted to stand them again at the place where they had fallen.
Brothers and sisters in the Lord,
We must listen Word from God. He wants us to stay with him without fleeing from our place were called from God. When we keep staying with God, God can make us restored and rebuild.
Verse 4 say,
“On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.”
The second order from the Lord is to wait for the gift that God promised us.
This means that we need to wait until God begin to work without following our own plan. Please do not move with patience before approval of the Lord. Waiting with trust God is faith it is.
While waiting for God will prepare for gift for us with best plan. We need to trust God with hope in waiting for while fear, disappointment, anger, and shame coming to us.
Verse 5 says,
“For John baptized with water, but in a few days, you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
John baptized with water, but Jesus says that there will be baptized with Holy Spirit.
Johns’ baptism was water baptism but disciples who did not leave and stay with Lord received fire baptism, Holy Spirt baptism. They have changed their thoughts and mind and vision after receiving the gift of Holy Spirit. They thrived worldly glory before Holy Spirit, but they began to thrive in Godly glory after Holy Spirit.
They asked Jesus Christ “when are Christ restoring kingdom of Israel before Holy Spirit. They still wanted secular glory, but Jesus Christ answered them what they would be after Holy Spirit.
They will be witnesses to the Risen Lord to the end of the earth.
Verse 8 say,
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witness in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
The interest of disciples was still the restoration of this world. But Jesus Christ let them know how they would be changed and what they changed this world through the power of Holy Spirit.
Jesus promised them that Holy Spirit make them change from worldly glory to Godly glory.
Verse 6-7 say,
“So when they met together, they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.”
Jesus Christ did not explain on restoration of God’s kingdom but told them on their future with the gift of Holy Spirit that will be given.
When we were little child, we used to ask, “when is coming tomorrow?” mom and dad answered when you sleep tonight. And the next day we asked same question and they gave same answer. But after growing up we did not ask more of that question because we understood that.
Jesus answered them as this because they can understand when they grew up spiritually.
When disciples looked up intently into the sky Jesus Christ was going, two angels told them Verse 11 say,
“Men of Galilee,” they said,” why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”
Those who stay with God and wait for the gift from God will be blessed as life walking together with God.
Faith is love and being in God. Through this faith God will work to save all soul in the world. Let us stay with God and wait for Holy Spirit so that you can be blessed in loving God.
A man attended worship service in church after many times as this. Riding his wife every Sunday. Few years later he walked in the worship and listened Word of God. He made decision to be baptized. He became good Christian to guide people to the Lord. He contributed much to help gospel delivered in his workplace as well. He confessed that staying with God leads him to blessing.
Acts 2:18 say,
“Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Sprit in those days and they will prophesy.”
Verse 21 say,
“And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved
God be with all of you, Amen.
