“On The Way To Emmaus” (Luke’s Gospel 24:27-35)

May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.

Niall Ferguson, author of book, Empire, analyzed several empires and their rise and fall as superpowers. He emphasized that their falls have begun from the point of passing their debt interests beyond their military expenses. That was common ground and there was no exception.

House of Habsburg of Spain in 16th century, House of Bourbon of French in 17th century, and Ottoman Turks in 18 centuries. England in 19 centuries has been fallen after meeting this financial point of the nation revenue.

Last year the debit interest of the nation exceeded beyond military expense for the first time in US history. People began to worry about this for nation’s future.

There was no everlasting empire. All human power has ended and there is no long-lasting in the world.

Eternity belongs to God. God only is eternal. The event that the eternal God has given us His eternity is Resurrection. Jesus Christ made open the road to resurrection for us through his resurrection.

Today Bible let us know how the risen Lord walk with us.

Let us read together Luke’s Gospel 24:30-35,

“When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, “it is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.”

The risen Lord appeared before two disciples on the way down to Emmaus near Jerusalem. The two very were hurt and disappointed when the Lord Jesus died by leaders of their society. They lost their hope and life direction and gave up their mission. They were leaving After Lord disappeared before their sight, the two got up and returned at once to Jerusalem and reported it to Eleven disciples.

Their hearts were burning while the Word was listening to them and their eyes were opened while Lord gave thanks and broke the bread before them.

Verse 32 say,

“They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

The moment that our heart is burned is the moment of listening
Word of God.

Brothers and sisters in the Lord,

What is Word? Word is the message of proclaiming that Lord is my master of life, and He bought our soul by his precise blood.

so, if our heart is burned when listening the Word, it is the work of Holy Spirit who make us love God as the two on the way to Emmaus did.

And as the two disciples could recognize the risen Lord when they share the bread with the Lord, we can recognize the Lord when we join in holy fellowship with the Lord.

God be with all of you, Amen. God makes us recognize the Lord and open our spiritual eyes when we listen Word and join holy fellowship with the Lord and believers together.

Please gather to listen Word and to share love in God. The risen Lord will be with us through Word and sacrament, holy ceremony.

Saints, holy people are called by God to share our faith to resurrection through Word and fellowship. The living Lord lives with us through holy fellowship.

We are enjoying eternal life through the resurrection of the Lord. Holy Spirit helps us to enjoy with the risen Lord.

Verse 30-31 say,

“When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.”

Their feeling of the disciples on the way to Emmaus was despair. They were shocked by unjust secular world. Their world looked unfair and sinful world. They were hopeless as this world was.

But they met again the Risen Lord on the way to despair. Our Lord came to them with Word and Meal to encourage their faith to God. They understood that nothing defeats the risen Lord even death.

The reason that we praise and raise Him is this. Nothing overcomes the risen Lord. Death, sin, and any power in the world could not defeat on the Lord.

Only our God is Almighty and sovereign God.

The risen Lord appeared Mary, and the Eleven disciples including Thomas, Peter, even Paul through Word and fellowship.

The first word of Jesus Christ resurrected was “Peace be with you.” Arene!

Verse 36,

“While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.””

The faith of resurrection is gift for us believing God to change death and despair to hope and joy and thanksgiving. So, we are witness to resurrection.

One man has been healed from serious disease after accepting Lord Jesus Christ. He has experienced much with the loving God through his faith life in holy people. When he arrived his end if life, he confessed that he could believe eternal life in God through the risen Lord.

Mark’s Gospel 16:20 say,

“Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.”

God be with all of you, Amen.
