“Weeping Bitterly Of Peter” (Luke’s Gospel 22:54-62)

May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.

BTS, Bangtan boys group comeback concert has been in Seoul with huge audiences from worldwide. More than 5 million viewers online have watched the performance with Netflix streaming service. Hamish Hamilton who has been the compere on Academy Award, Oscar Award, and NFL, National Football League, was compered as well in the event.

BTS fan club, ARMY gathered online and offline to cheer and celebrate their boy group when their stars all returned from military obligation to music concerts.

Even though 7 boys have contributed nation’s values in Worldwide, they went to military obligation 2 more years without asking for exemption as medalists of Olympic or world cup game. This seemed they wanted to carry their responsibilities as civilians. This seems to people like them more with their music talent.

Today Bible introduces a person who wanted to carry his responsibility but not to be able to do due to fear.

Let us read together Luke’s Gospel 22:57-62,

“But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said. A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” Man, I am not!” Peter replied. About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.” Peter replied, “Man, I do not know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster was crowded. The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him; “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.”

Before arrested, our Lord Jesus Christ had last supper with his disciples. Jesus Christ there said that all disciples abandoned their Lord. Peter among them replied that nobody would do that. He promised seriously that he would not deny the Lord in any case.

Jesus said that Peter would deny three times in this very night. And they went to Gethsemane with Lord to have prayer after dinner. There Jesus Christ was arrested by enemies and disciples were scattered. Only Peter followed them secretly to see what’s going on Lord.

Once some people recognized him in the court where Lord was treated badly and Peter was in fear due to his powerlessness. He denied three times his Lord due to fear to death. The last answer of him, Jesus turned his face to Peter and Peter remembered what the Lord said last night to him. So, he went outside and wept bitterly.

The twinkle of Jesus Christ was not resentment but pity on him with love. So, Peter couldn’t stop weeping.

Verse 61-62 says,

“The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him; “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”

And he went outside and wept bitterly.”

Weeping is only way for lover to do for lover when they have no power to protect it. One with love responds to their loving one in any case of pain and sadness and danger. Tear is from love.

Peter loved Lord but had no power to protect him so that he wept because he really loved the Lord Jesus Christ.

Lord knew that Peter’s love to the Lord, so Jesus Christ went to find him at shore of Galilee after resurrection.

Nobody stayed with the Lord except Peter. That was the evidence of how much Peter loved his own Lord. Jesus Christ went first to find his disciple Peter due to his deep love to his Lord.

John’s Gospel 21:7 say,

“Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” as soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord.” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.”

Brothers and sisters in the Lord,

What Peter wrapped in his outer garment was his honor manner to his loving Lord. And jumping into the water was his loving expression to the Lord.
Peter was so excited to see the Lord who came to see himself even though his shameful mistakes.

Jesus Christ restored his calling of Peter there with ministry order three time reminder.

John’s Gospel 21:17 say,

“The third time he said to him. “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked, “Lord, you know all things, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed mu sheep.”

In word of legend, Peter was fleeing from Rome due to persecution by Nero emperor. Suddenly resurrected Jesus Christ appeared with chains on body before Peter. Peter asked the Lord, “Quo Vadis Domine?  My Lord, where are you going?” Lord answered him “I am going to Rome where you abandoned my people in Rome. Peter did weep once again and understand that Lord wanted Peter’s love on flock of sheep in pain. Peter immediately returned to Rome, and he sacrificed his life for the sheep whom Peter really loved as Lord Jesus did.

I Corinthians 13:7-7 say,

“It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will still; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.”

God be will all of you. Amen.
