" Solitude Of Gethsemane” (Matthew’s Gospel 14:32-42)

May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.

Longevity research is active and research point primary facts are healthy food, good medicine, excise, social activity, and reading.

The most fact among them is dialogue with others. And good human relationships are important as well. This means people with good and trustful human relationship might be in healthy longevity.

Believers are great examples of having trustful relationships with each other. They go to church weekly or daily to share and practice their faith and love.  They are in purpose driven life. They share life by carrying their talent and love to build good and trustful spiritual community. Through doing this they can be healed or restored body and soul.

Today Bible let us know the prayer of our Lord Jesus Christ at the last moment of his life at Gethsemane. He focused on connecting with Father in heaven by great prayer.

Let us read together Mark’s Gospel 14:35-40,

“Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that, if possible, the hour might pass from him. “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will. Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping, “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak. Once more he went away and prayed for the same thing. When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.”

After last supper our Lord Jesus Christ went to the place of praying in small hill of Gethsemane near Jerusalem with his disciples. There the Lord began to pray to God for his mission while disciples all were sleeping. They could not wake up due to deep nighttime. Jesus Christ was so feeling painful because he knew the time would come soon to die on cross. He was very upset and frustrated then.

Jesus asked his disciples three times to join in his prayer, but they couldn’t do that because of deep sleeping. Lord had to pray alone.

Verse 36 say,

“Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

Jesus called God as “Abba” that means “daddy” when he prayed alone in solitude. And when he prayed to God when he hung on cross, he called God as “Eli” that means “Almighty”.

This showed that Jesus Christ was praying God in private when he has prayed at Gethsemane. Lord Jesus was praying to God by calling daddy desperately.

If a son of judge must be in judgement due to offence and his father were judge, he has to call “Judge” but after trail he call him as “daddy”.

Jesus Christ had to pray alone without anyone while praying to God father at the most frustrated moment of life. He could ask God to carry his mission to Calvary for salvation of all humans.

This prayer of Gethsemane is one of standard prayers that Lord taught us. One is Lord’s prayer and the other is Gethsemane prayer. Lord’s prayer teaches us how to ask for glory of God and daily bread and life.

Gethsemane prayer teaches us what to ask as children of God. Yet not what I will but what you will is this.

Our request begins from our needs in life but after mature we begin to pray God’s will not my will. To be used for the will of God is our purpose of faith and life as children of God.

Brothers and sisters in the Lord,

Gethsemane prayer must be ours when we pray in crisis or risky. We must think who we are and what we must do as children of God in complicated situation of life.

We pray for our plan and my will. But Lord prayed for the will of God. Lord asked God how to do for fulfilment of plan of God.

Peter was praying for his will once he was immature spiritually. But once he was mature, he began to pray for God’s will not his will more. He prayed God for how to serve others not himself. He always asked God about will of God in serving others.

John’s Gospel 21:18 say,

“I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you, and lead you where you do not want to go.”

As children of God, it is better for us to pray for others not ourselves. It is our blessing to pray for will of God for not our will.

Jesus Christ saved all human being from all sin and judgement through sacrificing his life on cross. The prayer in Gethsemane made the will of God perfect. Through His great obedience we are saved and be in eternal life.

Let us follow the way of our Lord Jesus Christ through learning his prayer.

In ceremony of pastor ordination, one retired pastor gave exhortation remark to a candidate for pastor. He said that from now on you must go for will of God not for your will.

The candidate was moved from the word because that is what Lord said to his disciples.

Matthew’s Gospel 26:39 say,

“My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

God be will all of you. Amen.
