“Everlasting Word of God” (I Peter 1:18-21)

May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.

Korea national soccer team won Czechia in the match of World Cup. There were many players who contributed to winning the game. When the interview after game, director of Czech team, Miroslav Koubek said, the reason of their defeat was Heungmin Son.

While defending Son their players were totally discharged their physical and mental energy, and after player replacement of Son, their players were all become lax so that they could not defend another Korean player. They called this “strategic gravitation”

Son did not make goals but made great space where peer players could make goals through making exhaust.

Sacrifice of one player makes success of other players. This is true teamwork in sports like soccer.

Today let us know how much our Lord Jesus Christ sacrifice for us and make us blessed.

Let us rea together I Peter 1:18-21,

“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.”

What is the empty way of life? It is to deny God, to not know God, to not glorify, to worship the dead forefathers, to please idols handed down to us from our forefathers.

We were in perishable tradition from the ancestors because of not knowing gospel. This grace of salvation comes to us through not with perishable things as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ

Verse 19 say,

“but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.”

We are saved by the precious blood of Jesus Christ! God so loved us that he accepted us to be His wonderful children of grace through the precious blood of Christ who have been before the beginning of the world and sacrificed himself for our salvation.

We as Korean, have been worshipped the dead ancestors according to ancestorial ceremony as other nations worshipped their idols. Under this empty of way of life, except some ruling class, most people have lived as slave without meaning of the truth of life under creation of God.

God was pity on us and sent His servants, missionaries, to the diligent but have not been a chance to know the truth when they were bottom of life under Japanese occupation. So, people of Korea could open their eyes to God, Creator and Redeemer, true Lord of all life.

People began to understand their own life value and Lord’s love giving His precious Son for their salvation from the sins condemned. They began to throw away the ancestry ceremony and to worship the living God and to born again in the grace of God. They became the people blessed by God. Nation is also blessed people is blessed much as well.

Verse 22 say,

“Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth as that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.”

We now have been purified once we confessed our sin and believed in God with sincere faith. And the mission of us purified by love of God is to love one another with sincere love.

Brothers and sisters in the Lord,

We must love one another with sincere love according to the love of God showing us through sacrifice of Jesus Christ in Calvary.

There is not love in hatred and in killing life. These things cannot establish the righteous of God. Only love can make it. Only the way that God showed us can make the true righteousness. Love and sacrifice is only way to save life and world. This is only way that we must follow as children of God.

Frederick Miller was a missionary from US a century ago sent to Cheongju, Korea. His two children and his wife were all dead there in few years arrived there. But he did not leave and returned to his home country. He spent his all life in there with people and serve them with gospel. He started hospitals and schools and churches in Chungcheong province. He composed several hymns. One of them is “Who, you ask me, is my Jesus” number 96 hymnal in Korean Hymn book. This is 1 verse;

“Who , you ask me, “is my Jesus? Mourners’ Comforter is He. He is plenty for the needy. Hight for all of low degree. He’s the freedom of the captives, And our joy eternally.”

The love in Bible is not just word but life, not explain but content, not show up but real practice.

Erich Fromm, a French philosopher said in his great book “The Art of Love” love is giving, and love is understanding. Without giving and understanding love cannot come true. This is the way of God showing us through Christ Jesus on cross. God sacrificed himself to save us, not judging sinners.

Dogs follow only the person who keep feeding and cleaning up poop. Love is responsibility and acceptance and patience. God accepts us as is while world deny us. God wants to get all while the world wants to get what they want. So, the world survives only winner, but God saves all including the loser.

This is the will of God, and this is Word of God. So, the Word of God redeems this world. This is why we love the Word of God today.

I Peter 1:23 say,

“For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.”

God be with all of you, Amen.
