“The Little Lamb of God” (John’s Gospel 1:29-34)
May the grace and love of God be upon you who is listening to God’s voice today in this worship.
Today is Holy Trinity Sunday. God is revealed in the Holy Trinity. We confess that it is God is One God in Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. As Christian the confession of The Triune God is our essence of faith.
Whenever we read books of Gospel, we confess that God is revealed in Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
From the beginning of the church on earth there were many heresy teachings, and they tried to break this Trinity confession in faith life. But they had disappeared themselves in history due to own contradiction.
God let them go to their wrong way in history so that only right confession can be confessed.
When we confess our God is one in Father, Son, And Holy Spirit, our faith becomes strong and stable. Toady Bible let us know a scene that Triune God is at same time before us.
Let us read together John’s Gospel 1:32-34,
“Then John gave this testimony; “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me. “The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.
I have sent and I testify that this is the Son of God.”
When Baptismal John proclaimed Word of God, Jesus Christ came to him for baptism, he recognized him as Son of God according to voice from God. And once he baptized Him, Holy Spirit came down on Him, and voice of God has been heard. This is the typical scene of appearing The Triune God in one place and one time in the Bible.
John’s Gospel 1: 1 say,
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
In ancient Greek, Hella word, the Word was said as Logos. And New Testament was written in this language first. They said the ministry of baptismal John as “the voice of calling in the desert. And Jesus Christ was said to be Logos which is God of creation and wisdom.
Christ is Word and has been from the beginning of the world.
Genesis 1:1 say,
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
Genesis 1:3 say too,
“And God said, “Let there be light,” and the was light.”
God created this world by his Word. God’s Word is not voice but power to create all thing in the world. John’s Gospel 1:14 say as well,
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
God creator became flesh and this is called to be Incarnation which is God became human being for the sacrifice to redeem all human being from sin and judgement.
John’s Gospel 1:32 say,
“Then John gave this testimony; I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.” He continued to say in verse 33-34 as well,
“I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, “The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit. I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God.”
John said to Jesus “the Lamb of God” sent from God for our salvation.
John’s Gospel 1:29 say,
“said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
Matthew testifies this scene as this;
Matthew’s Gospel 3:16-17 say,
“As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
There are lot of evidence in the Bible on triune God. We cannot deny this. If we read Bible carefully, it is for us harder to deny the trine God.
Disciples Phillip asked Jesus to show God one day. Jesus replied, “If you see me, you see Father.” as this;
John’s Gospel 14:8-9 say,
“Phillip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us,” Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Phillip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ’Show us the Father?”
In the Bible especially, Gospels there are many Word that show God is one in Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God works together in Triune God always from the Genesis to Revelation.
And Holy Spirit is called Counselor which is comforter and Helper. Holy Spirit is God in us and let us know the will of God in our life.
John’s Gospel 14:20 say,
“On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.
This is work of Holy Spirit who live is us always as the Triune God.
John’s Gospel 14:25-26 say,
“All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
Father, Son, and Holy Spirt are all One God. This is our confession and God’s way of existing with us.
When Jesus said this truth, Jews were angry and tried to hit him by stones. But Jesus did not stop saying this truth because it is fact and truth in God.
John’s Gospel 10:30-31 say,
“I and the Father are one. Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him,”
Jesus Christ that we believe in is God who creates this world. He is the sacrifice for our salvation through incarnation as flesh. Holy Spirit is in us to know the will of God. Let us keep this mystical truth until we come to heaven.
I Corinthians 13:12 say,
“Now we see a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”
Let us praise God and give Thanks to Him, working for us for our salvation with love and grace.
